Ways to Give

Thoughtful Gifts
That Last Forever

A planned gift to Bishop McGuinness is one of the most meaningful decisions you can make. Explore the options below — no matter your age, wealth level, or stage of life, there is a gift that fits.

Bequest in Your Will

The simplest planned gift — name Bishop McGuinness in your will for a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the residue after other gifts. Costs nothing today and is fully revocable.

Most Common

Codicil to Existing Will

Already have a will? A codicil lets you add a gift to Bishop McGuinness without rewriting your entire document — a simple, low-cost update through your attorney.

Simple Update

Living Trust Bequest

If you have a revocable living trust, name Bishop McGuinness as a beneficiary. Avoids probate and ensures a seamless, private transfer of your gift.

Contact the Legacy Office for sample bequest language to share with your attorney.

Retirement Account (IRA / 401k)

Name Bishop McGuinness as full or partial beneficiary on your IRA or 401k. Retirement assets are among the most tax-efficient to leave to charity — heirs pay income tax on inherited IRAs, charities do not.

No Attorney Needed

Life Insurance Policy

Name the school as full or partial beneficiary on a life insurance policy — or donate a paid-up policy you no longer need and receive an immediate charitable deduction.

Flexible

Bank or Brokerage Account

Add a "Transfer on Death" (TOD) or "Payable on Death" (POD) designation to any financial account. Transfers directly at death — no probate, no attorney required.

Avoids Probate

A form change is all it takes.

Appreciated Stock & Securities

Donating stock that has grown in value is one of the most tax-smart ways to give. You avoid capital gains tax entirely and receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value — a double benefit you don't get when selling first and donating cash. Transfer stock directly from your brokerage; do not sell first.

Significant Tax Savings

Mutual Funds & ETFs

Appreciated fund shares can often be transferred directly. Your financial advisor or fund administrator can walk you through the process for your specific holding.

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

If you are age 70½ or older, you can transfer up to $111,000 per year directly from your IRA to Bishop McGuinness — completely excluded from your taxable income. If you are 73 or older, it counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Simply contact your IRA custodian and request a direct transfer to us.

IRA as Beneficiary

Leaving your IRA to charity is often the smartest estate planning move. Heirs pay income tax on inherited IRAs; charities do not. Name us as full or contingent beneficiary at no cost.

Estate Efficiency

Make the most of your IRA.

Contact the Legacy Office to learn how a QCD could benefit you this tax year.

Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA)

Transfer cash or assets to Bishop McGuinness in exchange for fixed, guaranteed payments for life. A portion may be tax-free, and you receive an immediate partial charitable deduction. Payout rates increase with age.

Guaranteed Income for Life

Two-Life Gift Annuity

A CGA that makes payments to you and a second person — typically a spouse — for both of your lifetimes. Payments continue until the last surviving annuitant passes.

Couples Option

Deferred Gift Annuity

Make a gift now and defer payments until a future date — ideal for those still working who want larger, higher-rate payments in retirement.

Future Income

We can provide a personalized illustration showing your rate, payment amounts, and tax benefits.

Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)

Transfer assets into a trust that pays income to you for life or a term of years. At termination, remaining assets pass to Bishop McGuinness. Provides an immediate partial deduction and bypasses capital gains tax on appreciated assets.

Income + Legacy

Charitable Lead Trust (CLT)

The trust makes payments to Bishop McGuinness first (for a term of years), then remaining assets pass to your heirs. Useful for estate tax planning and transferring wealth to children at a reduced tax cost.

Wealth Transfer

Revocable Living Trust

A living trust avoids probate and allows you to name Bishop McGuinness as a beneficiary of trust assets — effective at death and entirely private.

Avoids Probate

Is a charitable trust right for you?

The Legacy Office can help you explore which structure fits your family and philanthropic goals.

Donor Advised Fund (DAF)

A DAF is like a charitable savings account. Contribute cash or appreciated assets, receive an immediate tax deduction, then recommend grants to Bishop McGuinness on your own timeline. Assets grow tax-free. You can also name Bishop McGuinness as the beneficiary of your entire DAF — one of the most powerful legacy gifts available.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need to be wealthy to make a planned gift?
Not at all. Many of our most impactful legacy gifts come from people of modest means who simply cared deeply about the school. Any amount leaves a permanent mark.
Can I change my mind after making a planned gift?
In most cases, yes. Bequests in your will and most beneficiary designations are fully revocable. We encourage you to revisit your estate plan periodically with your attorney.
Will the school know how much I've given?
Only what you choose to share. We can recognize you publicly or privately — your preference guides everything. Many donors simply notify us that a planned gift exists without sharing the specifics.
What is the school's tax ID number?
The EIN for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, under which Bishop McGuinness operates, is 73-0632924. Please provide this to your attorney or financial advisor.
How do I include the school in my will?
Ask your estate planning attorney to include a bequest provision naming "Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School" or the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City (EIN 73-0632924). You can specify a dollar amount, percentage, or residue of your estate.
Can I designate my gift for a specific purpose?
Yes. You may restrict your gift to scholarships, a specific program, capital improvements, or general endowment. Please discuss your intentions with us before finalizing documents.
What if I already have an attorney?
We strongly encourage you to work with your own attorney. Our role is to provide information — we can share sample bequest language with you to pass along to your attorney.
Is there a minimum gift size to join the Legacy Society?
There is no minimum. Membership is extended to anyone who notifies us of a planned gift intention — regardless of amount. Your commitment to the mission is what matters.
